McDonald’s tests ‘McCafe’ concept in Central Florida

While Starbucks closes 600 stores, McDonald’s announces that it’s converting corners of 180 Central Florida / Orlando restaurants into coffee shops. Baristas will be hired and trained, and each location will be staffed with between one and four depending on peak hours.

The project only costs them 100,000 dollars per store. Starbucks is getting wrecked.

I love how Orlando is the testing ground for all kinds of retail and restaurant concepts. I don’t think anyone has written on this subject yet.

1. Orlando is a college town many times over, with over 30 campuses. 2. It’s a resort town with the second most hotel rooms in the country next to Las Vegas. and, 3. it’s the number one corporate conference and convention destination. Since most of the Orlando landscape is suburban or exurban, it makes sense to market test here.
