Two weeks ago some coworkers were trying to figure out why random Whoppers malted milk balls are chewy instead of crunchy. The internet wasn’t helping, so I told them I would find out. I called Hershey’s company and got an answer, and today this four dollar voucher came in the mail.
Answer: some batches are heat damaged, causing the sugar in the malted milk to settle and/or evaporate. If chewy Whoppers are mixed in with mostly crunchy ones, it was probably just a fluke. If the entire package is chewy, they were damaged in shipping.
