STAY HUNGRY
In the market the other day
I wandered down a wrong aisle
and found myself
between two long rows
of neatly sorted
shiny
paint cans
My first impulse was to
stretch my arms
and in five
great
unflinching
strides
bring them all to the floor
and into a
violent
clamoring
clutter
I wanted to
and I didn’t
But, God
did I want to
Maybe next time I will
I’m so hungry
I could begin eating
now
and not stop
for two weeks in a row
I want to
but I won’t
I wonder if that which makes me a man
is my exertion of restraint
or the battle within
