How Did This Happen?
How did the calendar pages tear so fast?
How is tomorrow July and yesterday
May?
When ambition is new things slow to crawl.
Then the preparedness stops and the slowness withdraws.
They say North Korea has missiles that will soon
fly to Hawaii.
“They.”
Spies. Diplomats. Analysts.
I guess we all take the fight against fortuitousness lightly.
The excuses are vast
but the focus is narrow.
It’s a far-reaching stall,
to say
we are ready.
I’m not worried about North Korea—
I’m too busy trying to figure out how I placed ballistics
into the hands
of the hourglass sand.
Where is my panacea?
How did this happen?
How did this happen,
and when will it end?
